Neighbourhood Watch<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dawn blots up the inky starless sky,<\/p>\n

as birds tune up for the morning performance.<\/p>\n

A cul-de-sac cluttered with sleeping cars<\/p>\n

yawns onto a field, where ghosts of dead dogs<\/p>\n

chase squirrels they never catch.<\/p>\n

Same but different houses are not yet awake;<\/p>\n

eyes drawn closed or shuttered, anticipate a sudden onslaught of light.<\/p>\n

A tangled green battlement defends one from its frenemy,<\/p>\n

an antiseptic abode with a manicured lawn, relentlessly mowed by a bloke wearing rubber gloves and wellies.<\/p>\n

He has lived there for years but nobody knows his name.<\/p>\n

A solitary hanging basket swings from a porch,<\/p>\n

rocking to sleep the widow of a henpecked empty shell, elevated in death to Saint Bill.<\/p>\n

Two cars smooch on a driveway, loved up in a recent and unexpected relationship.<\/p>\n

A toppled dustbin spills its revealing guts.<\/p>\n

A tabby cat strolls home, a dog barks, a car engine starts up.<\/p>\n

I step away from the window.<\/p>\n
